About The Lincoln Journal
Founded in 1903, The Lincoln Journal has served as a cornerstone of local journalism for Lincoln County, West Virginia, for over a century. Based in the county seat of Hamlin, the newspaper emerged during a period of industrial growth for the region, which saw timbering and a major oil boom define the local economy. For much of its history, the Journal and its sister publication, the Lincoln News Sentinel, have functioned as the primary record of public life, documenting everything from local government decisions to high school sports across the county.
Ownership of the Journal remained in local and regional hands for decades before transitioning through several media groups in the late 20th century. In the late 1980s, the publication was purchased by Eugene Brewer, who later sold it to the Alabama-based Ben Smith Newspaper Group. In July 1995, Tom and Patty Robinson acquired the newspapers, managing them for over 25 years. Under the Robinsons’ stewardship, the paper maintained its commitment as a weekly broadsheet, serving a dedicated base of local subscribers and advertisers through the turn of the millennium.
In January 2021, the Lincoln Journal and Lincoln News Sentinel were acquired by HD Media LLC, a Huntington-based company that owns the Charleston Gazette-Mail and The Herald-Dispatch. This acquisition integrated the Hamlin-based weeklies into a larger regional network of southern West Virginia publications. Today, the Journal continues to publish every Wednesday, providing a mix of print and digital coverage that honors its 120-year legacy while adapting to the modern media landscape.
